The program

What the evening covers.

Planning for a possible long‑term care need is an important part of a client’s overall financial strategy. Coverage can help shield a couple’s or an individual’s portfolio from being depleted by long‑term care costs, and it gives them choice and flexibility in how that care is provided.

For business owners, it is also a benefit: offering long‑term care coverage can help recruit, reward and retain executives and valued employees, and certain types of coverage can be bought through the business to make the most of the tax deductions available. Hybrid policies that pair long‑term care benefits with life insurance avoid losing the premium if the benefits are little used, but their tax treatment differs from traditional long‑term care insurance, depending on how the product is designed. The presentation works through those differences, using Nationwide’s CareMatters II and CareMatters Together as the worked example.

In this session

  • How cash indemnity long‑term care benefits are paid, and when they are received tax free
  • How a hybrid policy’s structure, with separately paid riders, changes its tax treatment
  • Long‑term care coverage as a benefit for business owners and employees
  • Including spouses in an executive carve‑out
  • Age‑based limits on deducting a self‑employed owner’s long‑term care premiums
  • Sole proprietorships and company‑owned policies
  • Designing a policy for the greatest tax advantage

Julie Udovch

Regional Vice President
CareMatters, Nationwide

Julie Udovch is a Regional Vice President at Nationwide, where she represents CareMatters, the carrier’s flagship linked‑benefit long‑term care product, and CareMatters Together, its version for couples. She works with financial professionals on how linked‑benefit coverage works, why a cash indemnity policy gives clients more flexibility than a reimbursement policy, and how to have the extended care conversation with clients who insist they will never need it.

She came to the work personally. She spent 13 years, starting in her teens, as a caregiver for her great‑aunt, who had Alzheimer’s, and that is what first drew her to long‑term care insurance.

Nationwide has worked in long‑term care for 25 years and was the first carrier to offer cash indemnity long‑term care benefits. CareMatters recently marked its tenth anniversary.
